Understanding the True Purpose of Your Intuitive Gifts: A Spiritual Journey

Updated: 2 days ago

Are you someone who feels that you have an intuitive gift? Whether you call it a spirit of discernment, clairaudience, or if you have dreams that come true, or even receive visual visions—there are so many names for the gifts of the spirit. But nobody really talks about its true purpose. Sometimes, we wear it like a badge of honor, but we don’t always utilize it to its fullest potential. Or maybe you do use yours, but not in the way you should.

I'll speak for myself, because I know me, and it’s the best example I can use. When I was younger, I used to have dreams, and these dreams would come true. Sometimes they were about other people; other times, they were about upcoming events in the world. The more people I had around me, the more dreams I would have. I was a young pup in the spiritual game, so I hadn’t truly learned how to protect and shield myself. This led to countless sleepless nights, and at one point, I grew to hate this gift. It felt like I was being asked to be responsible for other people's "stuff." I couldn’t rest until I relayed the message, and most of the time, I was looked at as if I were crazy. “Why would God speak to you and not me?” they’d say.

This was a very hurtful period of my life, and it is one of the reasons I left religion and decided to have a personal relationship with Spirit and my spiritual tribe, cutting out the middle man. But before I did that, I begged for the dreams to go away—and they did.

As I grew in my personal spiritual journey, I grew closer and closer to Spirit, and eventually, I became open to my spiritual tribe. During this process, I learned that I was using my gift all wrong. It was never meant to be used only when a message was to be relayed to someone, or as a way to prove that I was a “spiritual person” and therefore “good.” It wasn’t meant to be a point of validation from others. It was meant for me. It was a gift given to me, for me.

The first time I realized this was when I had a dream about the pandemic six months before it happened. When it actually occurred, I was baffled because I knew the dream was about it, but it didn’t help me avoid it or give me any special instructions. I thought, Well, what was the point of even telling me about this?

It was then that Spirit revealed to me that my gift is a gift because it gives me what I like to call a "heads-up." Spirit let me know that what happens in the world will happen regardless, because everyone has free will. What you do with that free will is based on the decisions you make, moment to moment, day to day. However, to avoid being subjected to others' foolishness, when you are connected to your spirit, it will help you navigate this world and what it brings.

The dream was to tell me that something bad was coming, and to take cover. To know that I am protected and I will be alright. It was Spirit warning me that a time of uncertainty was coming, and to prepare myself for it so I wouldn’t be taken off guard. It was a message to find peace, knowing that even in the midst of it all, I would make it through.

I realized that all the times I had dreams and visions, they were conversations from Spirit, telling me what was to come and guiding me to allow my mind to be at peace and my spirit to be guided.

I say all that to say: sometimes your gift isn’t for other people. It may not be for you to go out and shout to the world, “Look at this great gift I have!” It may not be for you to tell someone what you see about them or expose them. Sometimes, your gift is for you—to help you know how to operate, how to handle certain situations, and how to deal with people. It’s about connecting with your spirit guides so they can navigate you around obstacles, as the universe opens and closes doors to get you where you need to go—while protecting you along the way.

So the next time you see something in someone, or hear conversations happening when you're not around, or get a vision of something that’s about to happen—think about it. Is this for you to tell people who can’t see or hear what you know? Or is this a gift from Spirit, giving you a heads-up about what’s going on around you, so you can navigate life with more peace and ease?

The more you connect with your spirit and your spiritual tribe—or whatever terminology you use to describe your spiritual journey—the sharper your gifts become. Navigating life becomes easier, regardless of what is or isn’t happening for you in any given moment.

Stay peaceful. Stay connected.

Love you lots,

– Sacred
